Why this course exists

To create a solid foundation and a common language on the AI Act (EU 2024/1689) and the requirements for the development, placing on the market, putting into service and use of AI systems in the European Union.

The use and integration of AI systems in organisations and market sectors represent relevant risks (health, safety and fundamental rights) that require governance, control and compliance.
The Artificial Intelligence Regulation (AI Act) establishes harmonised rules for the placing on the market, putting into service and use of AI systems in the Union, including prohibitions on certain practices, specific requirements for high-risk AI systems, obligations for operators, transparency rules for certain systems and rules for general-purpose AI models.
This course provides the fundamental knowledge required to interpret the regulation (articles and annexes) and support its practical application within the organisation, including conformity assessment, governance, market surveillance and conditions for the application of sanctions.

Introduction

The Artificial Intelligence Act Foundation course addresses the fundamental concepts and principles related to the requirements for the development, placing on the market, putting into service and use of artificial intelligence systems (AI systems) in the European Union.

The course presents the fundamental concepts of AI and the requirements of the Artificial Intelligence Regulation, Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of 13 June 2024 (referred to as the Artificial Intelligence Act – AI Act). This regulation aims to improve the functioning of the internal market and promote the adoption of trustworthy, human-centric artificial intelligence, while at the same time ensuring a high level of protection of health, safety and fundamental rights.

Throughout the course, the harmonised requirements and rules for the placing on the market, putting into service and use of AI systems in the Union are presented; the prohibitions of certain AI practices; the specific requirements for high-risk AI systems and the obligations of operators; and the harmonised transparency rules for certain AI systems.

Rules for the placing on the market of general-purpose AI models are also addressed, together with requirements for market monitoring and surveillance, governance and enforcement, as well as measures to support innovation, with particular emphasis on SMEs, including start-ups.

This course prepares participants for the Certified Artificial Intelligence Act Foundation personal certification.
