PROFESSIONAL LEVEL — practical application of methods in a professional context.
Why this course exists
To create a practical foundation and a common language in ISO/IEC 42001, AIMS/SGIA and implementation/operationalisation through a case study.
Many organisations begin adopting and scaling AI systems without a consistent basis of concepts, terminology, governance and operational understanding of the structure, requirements and controls of ISO/IEC 42001.
This course establishes a practical and applicable baseline of knowledge, supported by theoretical and practical sessions and by a case study, enabling professionals from different areas to understand, apply and support the implementation and operation of an AIMS, while also framing essential audit principles based on ISO 19011.
What this course enables you to do
Understand
Master fundamental Artificial Intelligence concepts (including Machine Learning, Neural Networks and Deep Learning) and interpret ISO/IEC 42001 in the context of an AIMS.
Apply
Apply concepts and requirements in a real scenario through a case study, with high-level guidance for the implementation and operation of an AIMS.
Correlate
Relate ISO/IEC 42001 to relevant AI and governance standards and references (e.g. ISO/IEC 22989, ISO/IEC 38507, ISO/IEC 23894, ISO/IEC TR 24030) and other correlated international practices.
Audit (fundamentals)
Understand concepts, principles and best practices for AIMS auditing based on ISO 19011, in order to support audits and continual improvement.
Frameworks, standards and best practices addressed throughout the course
AIMS/SGIA (fundamental concepts)

Value for the organisation
- Creates a common and applicable basis for teams involved in the adoption, implementation, operation and continual improvement of AI systems and of the AIMS.
- Accelerates internal alignment on ISO/IEC 42001 requirements, governance and controls (Annex A), reducing noise and divergent interpretations.
- Supports preparation for ISO/IEC 42001 compliance and certification initiatives, strengthening understanding of relevant standards and supporting practices.
- Introduces audit fundamentals (ISO 19011) to improve coordination between internal teams and audits (internal/external) in the AI context.
Introduction
The ISO 42001 Foundation course is based on the international standard ISO/IEC 42001 and follows a practical approach supported by a case study, in which participants are invited to apply Artificial Intelligence management concepts and requirements in a real scenario.
The course prepares participants to support the implementation and operation of an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS/SGIA), and provides the fundamental knowledge on audit concepts, principles and best practices based on ISO 19011.
The course addresses the fundamental concepts related to Artificial Intelligence, including concepts such as Machine Learning, Neural Networks and Deep Learning, and presents a clause-by-clause overview of ISO/IEC 42001 with high-level implementation guidance and discussions based on practical examples.
The course also addresses best practices for the implementation of the AI controls in Annex A of ISO/IEC 42001, based on the guidance provided by the standard itself in Annex B and other related Artificial Intelligence guidance.
As participants progress through the course themes, relevant standards and practices from the family of AI and governance standards are presented, including (among others) ISO/IEC 22989, ISO/IEC 38507, ISO/IEC 23894, ISO/IEC TR 24030, as well as other AI, cybersecurity, project management and correlated references (for example, concepts such as NLP or Adversarial AI). These references support the implementation and continual improvement of an AIMS and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements applicable in the AI context.
This course prepares participants for the personal certification BEHAVIOUR Certified Artificial Intelligence 42001 Foundation.
