Why this course exists

To support the transition from conceptual understanding to the organised application of ISO 45001 requirements in an organisational context.

Many organisations know the concepts of OHS, but need greater clarity on how ISO 45001 requirements translate, in practice, into the structure and operation of an OH&SMS. This course exists to create a common foundation, reduce divergent interpretations and support teams involved in implementation, operation and continuous improvement of the system, supported by a case study, correlated standards and relevant best practices.

Introduction

The ISO 45001 Foundation course is based on the international standard ISO 45001 and follows a practical approach supported by a case study, where participants are invited to apply OHS concepts and requirements in a real scenario.

The course prepares participants to support the implementation and operation of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OH&SMS) and provides fundamental knowledge of audit concepts, principles and best practices based on ISO 19011.

As participants progress through the course topics, the main supporting standards from the ISO 45000 family are presented, including, among others, implementation guidance (ISO 45002), the framework for psychosocial risks and well-being at work (ISO 45003) and guidance for performance evaluation (ISO 45004), as well as additional references, best practices, legislation and relevant regulation.

This course prepares participants for the Certified Occupational Health & Safety 45001 Foundation personal certification.

General Objectives

At the end of the ISO 45001 Foundation course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental OHS concepts and the main requirements of ISO 45001.
  • Know and understand the correlation between standards in the ISO 45000 family, including ISO 45001, ISO 45002, ISO 45003, ISO 45004 and related standards, as well as other applicable best practices, legislation and regulation.
  • Support an organisation in implementing and operating an ISO 45001-based OH&SMS, whether as part of a team and/or during an implementation project.
  • Understand fundamental audit concepts and principles based on ISO 19011.
  • Understand the various sources of OHS-related requirements, in order to discuss relevant matters with peers regarding OHS maintenance and improvement in the organisation.
  • Support the organisation in achieving and maintaining ISO 45001 certification.
  • Possess the knowledge required to successfully take the Certified Occupational Health & Safety 45001 Foundation certification exam and obtain a personal certification.

Exam “Certified Occupational Health & Safety 45001 Foundation”

The exam covers the following competence domains:

  • Domain 1: OHS foundations
  • Domain 2: ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management System requirements
  • Domain 3: Fundamental audit concepts and principles based on ISO 19011

 

Language(s): Portuguese and English.
Duration: 1 hour.
Format: Multiple choice.
Number of questions: 40 questions.
Pass mark: 260/400 points.
Results: Pass or Fail.
Issuing entity: Behaviour (legal entity), through its certification service Behaviour Certification Services.
Retake: 1 free retake within a maximum period of 2 months after the result of the initial exam.

Certification

After successfully completing the exam and accepting or signing the applicable agreement and Code of Ethics, the candidate obtains the Certified Occupational Health & Safety 45001 Foundation credential, issued by Behaviour (legal entity), through its certification service Behaviour Certification Services.

Behaviour® professional certification — proprietary scheme — with international recognition in the market. The scheme is designed and operated based on best practices for certification of persons, principles of impartiality and exam quality, and applicable international references, including the principles of ISO/IEC 17024.

A Certificate and a Digital Certification Badge will be issued to participants who successfully complete the certification exam and satisfy all requirements of the certification for which they are applying.

Certification programmes are valid only for individuals, and the award and maintenance of certification depend on the exam result, professional experience and compliance with the applicable agreement and Code of Ethics.

If the professional does not comply with the agreement or the Code of Ethics, the certification is not granted or is revoked.

What is the difference between ISO 45001 Foundation and ISO 45001 Lead Implementer?
The Foundation level focuses on practical understanding of OHS fundamental concepts, ISO 45001 requirements, correlated standards from the ISO 45000 family and audit principles based on ISO 19011. The Lead Implementer level goes deeper into the ability to design, implement, operationalise and improve an OH&SMS.
Does the course address only ISO 45001 or also other standards from the ISO 45000 family?
The course addresses ISO 45001 as the central standard and also frames correlated standards from the ISO 45000 family, including ISO 45002 — implementation guidance, ISO 45003 — psychosocial risks and well-being at work, and ISO 45004 — performance evaluation.

Is it mandatory to have the ISO 45001 standard to attend the course?
Yes. All participants must have a copy of ISO 45001:2018, in Portuguese or English, licensed to themselves or to their company.
